John was the founder and driving force behind SSP, the charity that promotes education in Swaziland - a country and people that John loved with a passion. He first went to Swaziland in the 1960s, when he was the minister in charge at All Saints Church in the capital Mbabane. It was there that he met his great friend the Very Revd Jack Dobson OBE and it was in the 1990s that they decided to celebrate the millennium by doing something a bit special - John raised the money in the UK and Jack built two classrooms at Forbes Reef School in Swaziland. It was from that first project that SSP evolved and for many years John was Chairman, leading the charity in his enthusiastic and humourous style. He stepped down as Chairman in 2014 but continued to play an active role as Vice Chairman and Life Vice President. Through John's vision, thousands of Swazi children and adults have been helped to get an education and because of him have gone on to escape poverty and stay healthy. We miss him greatly.
It was with great regret that the Trustees of SSP reported the death of Father Jack on 10 January 2018. He died at home in Mbabane in his beloved Swaziland. A great friend of John Tibbs, founder of SSP, Jack ran the Swaziland side of our charity for many years. He trained local men to undertake construction work and also founded the Dean's Bursary Scheme. Through donations, this scheme enabled many hundreds of children to have an education who otherwise would not have gone to school. Jack will be sorely missed for his many talents and cheeky sense of humour!
